Under EPA’s RRP Rule, paid renovation work that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities must meet federal lead-safe requirements. Covered firms must be certified and use a certified renovator to direct the work.
The rule establishes requirements for lead-safe work practices, occupant education, and recordkeeping. Minor repair exemptions may apply, but window replacement, demolition of painted surfaces, and certain prohibited practices remain covered regardless of square footage.
Renovation work that disturbs lead-based paint can create hazardous lead dust and debris. Required work practices help contain dust, prevent contamination from spreading beyond the work area and ensure the area is properly cleaned afterward.
